Biografia
Giuseppina or Josephine Medori (Josepha Wilmot) was a Belgian soprano. Verdi wanted her as Leonore in his "Il Trovatore" and as Violetta in his "La Traviata" for their Paris premieres. In New York, Medori starred at the Academy of Music in the 1862-63 and 1863-64 seasons ("Norma," "Ernani," "Faust," "Don Giovanni," "Il Trovatore," and others). Seeing her there in "Lucrezia Borgia," Walt Whitman wrote that Medori had "a voice that would make you hold your breath with wonder and delight ... it poured like a raging river." Medori - known for her glamour - poses in a bold plaid shawl with a lace collar and a magnificent, plumed hat at the Gurney studio in New York, circa 1861.
